Characters

Kai

ORIGINS

Born in the village of Ignacia, Kai was raised alongside his sister Nya in their father’s
blacksmith shop — Four Weapons. When Lord Garmadon’s Skulkin army kidnapped Nya, Master Wu arrived and recruited Kai as the first of a new generation of ninja. Hot-tempered and impulsive, Kai initially believed he was destined to be the Green Ninja, but discovered his true calling was to protect the one who was.

Joining the Monastery

When the Skulkin army kidnapped his sister Nya, Master Wu appeared at the family blacksmith shop, Four Weapons, and recruited Kai to join his ninja team. Driven by his desire to rescue Nya, Kai agreed to train and became Wu's first recruit of the new generation.

Fun Facts

Kai was originally convinced he was the Green Ninja. His love interest is Skylor Chen, the Elemental Master of Amber. He and Nya are the only biological siblings on the team. His favorite weapon is the katana sword, and is the only ninja and protagonist who has never defeated a main and/or final antagonist alone.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Fire, Kai possesses pyrokinesis — the ability to create and control fire. He is heat-resistant and can channel flames through his weapons. His True Potential was unlocked in Season 1 when he realized his destiny was not to be the Green Ninja, but to protect the Green Ninja.

Spotlight Season

Season 7: The Hands of Time — Kai takes center stage as he discovers the truth about his parents' past and their connection to the villainous Time Twins, Krux and Acronix. He must confront painful family secrets while fighting to save Ninjago's timeline.

Jay

ORIGINS

Jay Walker (born Jay Gordon) is the quick-witted, fast-talking, and inventive Blue Ninja. He is the team’s comedian, often cracking jokes even in the most dangerous situations. Despite being easily frightened, Jay always comes through when it matters. He is a talented inventor and mechanic, and his romantic relationship with Nya is one of the series’ longest-running storylines.

Joining the Monastery

Jay was recruited by Master Wu after Wu discovered him testing a pair of homemade mechanical wings at the junkyard where his adoptive parents, Ed and Edna Walker, lived. Wu saw Jay's potential and invited him to train at the Monastery of Spinjitzu.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Lightning, Jay can generate and manipulate electrical energy. He can fire bolts of lightning, charge objects with electricity, and move at enhanced speed. His True Potential was unlocked in Season 1 when he discovered Nya's feelings for him and realized he simply needed to be himself.

Spotlight Season

Season 6: Skybound - Jay is the central character as the djinn Nadakhan targets him specifically and captures the other ninja. Jay must use his wits to outmaneuver Nadakhan and make the ultimate wish to save Nya and undo the destruction of Ninjago.

Fun Facts

Jay was adopted by Ed and Edna Walker but is the biological son of the famous actor Cliff Gordon and the previous Master of Lightning. His signature weapon is nunchucks. He was the second ninja to unlock his True Potential (after Zane), doing so by accepting himself and realizing Nya had feelings for him. Jay is the only ninja whose biological and adoptive parents have both appeared in the show.

Cole

ORIGINS

Cole Brookstone is the grounded, strong, and dependable Black Ninja. He was the original leader of the team before Lloyd took on that role. Cole is the physically strongest ninja with a deep love of food, especially cake. Beneath his tough exterior, he has a sensitive side, particularly about his relationship with his father Lou, a famous singer in a barbershop quartet.

Joining the Monastery

Cole was the first ninja that Master Wu recruited. Wu found him climbing a mountain, which Cole was doing to get away from his father's expectations that he would follow in his footsteps as a performer. Wu recognized Cole's strength and determination and brought him to the Monastery.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Earth, Cole possesses super strength and earth manipulation. He can cause tremors, move rocks, and channel the power of the earth through his attacks. In Season 13, he unlocks a powerful new form of his earth abilities connected to his mother Lilly's legacy, called the Spinjitzu Burst.

Spotlight Season

Season 13: Master of the Mountain — Cole journeys to the underground kingdom of Shintaro and discovers his late mother Lilly's heroic history there. He must defeat the Skull Sorcerer, free the enslaved Munce and Geckles, and embrace his full potential as a leader.

Fun Facts

Cole was turned into a ghost in Season 5 and remained one until the Day of the Departed special restored him to human form. His mother, Lilly, was the previous Elemental Master of Earth. He has a noted fear of dragons (from the early seasons) and of singing, due to his father Lou being a member of the famous Royal Blacksmiths. Cole was originally voiced by Kirby Morrow, who passed away in 2020; Andrew Francis took over the role for Season 15.

Zane

ORIGINS

Zane Julien is the calm, analytical, and intelligent White (later Titanium) Ninja. What makes Zane truly unique is that he is a Nindroid — an android built by the inventor Dr. Julien. Zane initially had no idea he was a robot, which explained his lack of social awareness and odd behavior. Despite his mechanical nature, Zane has the biggest heart on the team and deeply values his brotherhood with the other ninja.

Joining the Monastery

Zane was built by Dr. Julien, who raised him as a son. After Julien passed away, Zane wandered alone with no memory of his origins until Master Wu found him meditating at the bottom of a frozen lake. Impressed by his discipline and resilience, Wu brought him to the Monastery to train.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Ice, Zane possesses cryokinesis — the ability to create and control ice and cold. He can freeze objects, create ice structures, and withstand extreme cold. Additionally, as a Nindroid, he has enhanced computational abilities, a built-in falcon companion, and can interface with technology.

Spotlight Season

Season 3: Rebooted and Season 11 (Ice Chapter) — In Rebooted, Zane sacrifices himself to defeat the Golden Master. In the Ice Chapter of Season 11, the ninja travel to the Never-Realm where Zane has been corrupted into the terrifying Ice Emperor by the manipulative Vex.

Fun Facts

Zane is the only non-human member of the core team. He was the first ninja to unlock his True Potential, discovering he was a robot. After his sacrifice in Season 3, he was rebuilt in a titanium body. His falcon companion is also a robot built by Dr. Julien. Zane's romantic interest is P.I.X.A.L., making them the show's only robot couple.

Lloyd

ORIGINS

Lloyd Montgomery Garmadon is the legendary Green Ninja and current leader of the ninja team. The son of Lord Garmadon and the grandson of the First Spinjitzu Master, Lloyd carries a complicated legacy. He started as a mischievous child wanting to follow in his father’s villainous footsteps but was reformed and eventually accepted his destiny as the prophesied hero of Ninjago.

Joining the Monastery

Lloyd first appeared in Season 1 as a troublemaking kid released from Darkley's Boarding School for Bad Boys. After his schemes backfired, he was taken in by his uncle, Master Wu, and the ninja. When the prophecy of the Green Ninja was revealed and Lloyd was identified as the chosen one, Wu began training him at the Monastery.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Energy (originally the Golden Power), Lloyd is the most powerful ninja. He can project energy blasts, create energy shields, and channel pure elemental energy. He once wielded the combined power of all four Golden Weapons as the Golden Ninja, though he later distributed this power among the other ninja.

Spotlight Season

Season 2: Legacy of the Green Ninja and Season 8: Sons of Garmadon — Season 2 follows Lloyd's rise to fulfill the prophecy and defeat the Overlord. Season 8 is deeply personal as Lloyd faces betrayal by Harumi and must confront a resurrected, purely evil version of his own father.

Fun Facts

Lloyd was aged up from a child to a teenager by the Tomorrow's Tea in Season 2. He is the nephew of Master Wu and the grandson of the First Spinjitzu Master. Lloyd is voiced by Jillian Michaels in Seasons 1–7 and Sam Vincent from Season 8 onward. Before Lloyd, Kai was the original main character of the series; the turning point came when Kai realized his destiny was to protect Lloyd, not replace him.

NYA

ORIGINS

Nya Smith is the tough, determined, and resourceful Water Ninja. Kai’s younger sister, she initially supported the team as the armored warrior Samurai X before officially joining as the sixth ninja. Nya is a brilliant mechanic and engineer who builds many of the team’s vehicles. She refuses to be defined by anyone else’s expectations and consistently proves herself as one of the strongest members of the group.

Joining the Monastery

Nya was present from the very beginning, as the Skulkin kidnapped her to lure Kai into action during the pilot episodes. Rather than wait to be rescued, Nya secretly trained herself and built the Samurai X mech suit. She officially joined the Monastery and the ninja team, and in Season 5 she was confirmed as the Elemental Master of Water.

Elemental Powers

As the Elemental Master of Water, Nya possesses hydrokinesis — the ability to control and generate water. She can create waves, water blasts, and manipulate moisture in the air. Her True Potential was unlocked during Season 5 when she created a massive tidal wave to defeat the Preeminent.

Spotlight Season

Season 14: Seabound — Nya's powers become dangerously unstable, and she journeys to the Endless Sea to find answers. She must stop Prince Kalmaar from awakening the sea serpent Wojira. In a devastating climax, Nya sacrifices her physical form by merging with the ocean to save Ninjago.

Fun Facts

Nya was the original Samurai X before passing the mantle to P.I.X.A.L. She is Jay's girlfriend and Kai's sister. Nya is the daughter of Ray (Master of Fire) and Maya (Master of Water). She is one of only two ninja who were not directly recruited by Master Wu, having joined the team on her own terms. Her sacrifice in Seabound was later addressed in Crystalized.

P.I.X.A.L.

ORIGINS

P.I.X.A.L. (Primary Interactive X-ternal Assistant Life-form) is a female Nindroid and the team’s vital technical support. Created by Cyrus Borg, she was originally his assistant before developing her own independence and emotions through her connection with Zane. P.I.X.A.L. is logical, precise, and fiercely devoted to the team, often serving as mission control from Destiny’s Bounty.

Joining the Monastery

P.I.X.A.L. was introduced in Season 3: Rebooted as Cyrus Borg's assistant. After being freed from the Overlord's control, she was disassembled in Season 4 and uploaded into Zane's system as an AI. She secretly rebuilt a physical body during Season 7 and adopted the Samurai X identity, becoming an integral support member of the Monastery and the ninja team.

Elemental Powers

While P.I.X.A.L. does not possess traditional elemental powers, she is an incredibly capable combatant and strategist. As a Nindroid, she has enhanced strength, processing power, and can interface directly with any technology. As Samurai X, she pilots advanced mech suits and vehicles, and provides real-time tactical analysis during missions.

Spotlight Season

Season 7 onward: The Samurai X Arc — P.I.X.A.L.'s journey to independence is a slow-burn storyline. After secretly rebuilding herself during The Hands of Time, she reveals herself as the new Samurai X and takes on a crucial operational role, especially in Seasons 8–10 where she commands the Bounty and supports the ninja during the Garmadon crisis and the Oni invasion.

Fun Facts

P.I.X.A.L.'s name is an acronym for Primary Interactive X-ternal Assistant Life-form. She was the first compatible Nindroid Zane ever encountered, which sparked their romantic connection. She existed purely as a voice in Zane's head for multiple seasons before rebuilding herself. P.I.X.A.L. is voiced by Jennifer Hayward throughout the series.
